Between
A series made on the streets of Melbourne's CBD, 2014–2015.
This collection explores the intermediate spaces of Melbourne’s city centre. From the bustling corridors of Elizabeth and Collins Streets to the quiet recesses of Cohen Place and the city's iconic laneways.
Captured over a decade ago, Between documents the paradox of the modern commuter: brushing past one another on crowded footpaths, yet entirely isolated within our own personal journeys. By deliberately obscuring faces, the focus shifts to what we perceive in our peripheral vision. The texture of a garment, the tilt of a collar, or a sudden, fleeting gesture.
Living with these images for over ten years reveals a quiet truth about the urban experience. We routinely pass strangers and construct elaborate internal narratives about their lives based on nothing more than the clothes they wear. In turn, it raises a question: are the garments we choose just a story we are telling ourselves about who we are?
To preserve the raw honesty of these encounters, every photograph was made using a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and a 35mm f/1.2 lens. No artificial intelligence or generative manipulation was used in the making of this work.
